Things I'd do Again (next time)

A checklist of the things that we've done well in preparing for MelbourneDAC:

  • run several email lists for the different groups involved (committee, writers, delegates)
  • run an online conference management system to look after submissions, allocation of papers, judging of papers, collection of information, and generation of reports
  • insist on a proper review process for abstracts (3 anonymous reviews)
  • require abstracts to be written up as full papers which are then reviewed again (every paper at DAC has been reviewed at the abstract and again at a 'final' draft stage)
  • require all authors to pay heed to reviewers comments
  • run a conference blog for disseminating information and documenting the process of the conference throughout the organisation of the event
  • put together a one month exhibition at a national level institution for the artworks associated with MelbourneDAC
  • written and published an exhibition catalogue to go with the show
  • provided a print proceedings of long papers and a CDROM of all papers and panels to all full delegates
  • ensured that the conference cost includes the cost of the proceedings, CDROM and all events except the conference dinner (tried but that was too hard)
  • provide explicit instructions to authors about the sorts of work being encouraged
  • provide a stylesheet for authors to use
  • provide an informal day 'away' from the conference for more relaxed networking, for this to be included within the conference price and to be treated as an integral part of the event
  • provide an informal day away where you make sure international guests see more than the hotel, university campus, and city streets
  • ensure that all boards are a combination of established academics and new career academics and researchers
  • not provide keynotes to emphasis the equity of all participants
  • provide a performance evening to showcase many of the participating artists live work
  • make the conference registration price as inclusive as possible of all activities (if you registered for the 5 days then you get print proceedings, CDROM proceedings, early access to all papers, trip to the country, free entry to the performance night, invitation to the official reception, morning, afternoon tea and lunch for 4 days)
