This essay utilises Apple's QuickTime technology to provide video examples. This requires the QuickTime plugin, which is available for Macintosh and Windows, and can be downloaded from http://www.apple.com/quicktime and extensive online support from http://www.info.apple.com/support/quicktime/.
Each video sequence is provided in three different versions, user selectable. In compressing this material the emphasis has been placed on image legibility rather than frame rate.
It is normal and usual to be confronted by an invitation to purchase the Professional version of QuickTime when it is first used. Dismissing this dialog box once should prevent its reappearance. The Professional edition of QuickTime is not required to view QuickTime content. To view QuickTime content via the web browser QuickTime must be installed on your system, including the QuickTime plugin. Simply installing the plugin, without installing the rest of QuickTime, will not work.
QuickTime 4.1 or better is recommended.
