An earlier film that relies on continuity of screen direction so we can see that the women is moving towards Keaton. This is 'broken' when the boat goes over the waterfall. It should also be noted that the significance of the intercutting is heavily determined by the narrative context, both the temporal continuity and the movement towards a deadline.
