rhetoric
Many hypertext and cyberculture theorists have noted the relationship between classical rhetoric and hypertext (and email, newsgroups, IRC, etc).
Perhaps the major theorist of hypertext and new media who examines the relationship of rhetoric to utterance is Richard Lanham, a professor of English literature who has written extensively on rhetoric, and more recently, hypertext.
Interestingly Gunnar Liest¿l has also made extensive use of rhetoric, though in some ways to different ends to Lanham, and it is their respective uses of rhetoric in hypertext that we will examine.
