Student Hypertexts, or Theory meets Pedagogy?
(This essay was first presented as a paper at the RMIT Global University Conference, Melbourne 1997.)
As the information economy enters the academy there is considerable pressure on academics and educational institutions to utilise information technology in our teaching practice. While the rhetoric of this technological application is orientated towards quality outcomes in teaching and learning it is also clear that there is a belief that such technology will lead to the more rational delivery of education for teachers and students. This essay looks at the other side of our adoption of new technologies, surveying some of the academic issues that student use of hypertext and hypermedia raise in a more or less traditional humanities program.
