use of media

As with the use of colour and typography, there are pedagogical issues that develop around the use of various media elements in a hypertext. Students can include sound, still, and moving image within their work. In cinema studies some students are taking advantage of this to incorporate film extracts into their theoretical work, in the process struggling with ways of how to use a literally moving image within their critical writing.

There are instances of work where images are being used to produce what might be described as visual 'texture', rather than just illustration, or where the relationship between word and image is much more idiosyncratic than that offered by 'illustration' where the image, while perhaps worth a thousand words, remains the servant of the word. This is the realm of what Greg Ulmer has defined as the 'mystory', and while such writing is legitimate within the strictly literary how an argument might be conducted in such a work remains to be demonstrated or developed.
