Storyspace & The hyperText Project
The Storyspace Toolbar

Storyspace Toolbar

There is a small floating toolbar that Storyspace uses which contains most of the standard tools for reading and writing a hypertext web. For each of the different publication versions of Storyspace there is a variation on this common toolbar, and readers can use this to navigate their way through a web.

The tools are (from left to right, top to bottom);

  • creating new text spaces
  • selecting text, spaces, or other tools
  • note spaces (these are normal text spaces but have a built in two way link from source to anchor)
  • follow link
  • resize the space (larger or smaller)
  • start link
  • store link (useful for when you can't see the destination of your link)
  • compass, for moving up a level, down a level, left or right (in my experience never used, confusing and generally a waste of time)

Since it is a floating toolbar it can be positioned anywhere on the computer screen and in teaching the use of the software most students appear to prefer the toolbar to using menu commands.

blue line A small pedagogical caveat...
While Storyspace is one of the major hypertext tools being used, it must be borne in mind that the Hypertext Project is an effort to develop an understanding and awareness of new modes of writing and publication. All work undertaken within the Project is orientated towards these issues, rather than specific software products or proprietary solutions. This is why the Project's long term aim is to test the possibilities of allowing students across subjects to have multiple methods of presenting work, and for staff to have multiple modes of assessing work.
