Singin' in the Rain:
materiality

a beautiful sunset

Though this is not apparent when digitised, this part of the sequence (particularly when Don first makes "A beautiful sunset") is one of the most materially beautiful images in the film. Here, while the shot clearly retains its referential valence, it also approaches an intensity of colour, luminance, and texture that gives an almost corporeal physicality to the image, perhaps a carnality, and this excess while easily reinscribed into the economy of excess attributed to the musical eschews mere spectacle for another translating of itself into a mode of seduction and synethesic affect, which will eventually express itself as song, then dance.
